Indigenous Studies Track
NAIITS offers a track in Indigenous Studies in partnership with Providence University College. The classes are open for credit and audit. Applications for credit are through Providence University College and audit applications can be made to either Prov. or NAIITS.
Indigenous Studies courses at Providence explore the centrality of Indigenous Peoples within historic and contemporary Canada
Since September 2018, NAIITS and Providence University College, in Manitoba have been offering an Indigenous Studies Track so that college students can learn about the centrality of First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples and issues in historic and contemporary Canada. Connecting with them via videoconferencing platform, NAIITS instructors will be offering a number of courses, usually one per term that will cover a range of topics and concerns.
We desire to make people aware of the diversity that is the Indigenous community in Canada and elsewhere. Additionally, we would certainly hope that these courses would foster better awareness of the work that needs to be done to ‘love justice, do mercy, and walk humbly with God.’
While the full track has yet to be defined, the numerous offerings will be delivered through a partnership between Providence and NAIITS that will bolster Indigenous Studies on the Otterburne campus in both the short and long terms.
Our hope for takeaways for students would be that they would have a more accurate picture of the issues that have, and, in many cases continue, to confront Indigenous peoples, as well as the historical contexts in which those issues arose. We hope that as they gain a fuller picture—a more realistic picture, and one that addresses stereotypes and misconceptions—they would be better equipped to engage in right relationship with Indigenous peoples wherever they may be.
The number-one target audience for the courses offered by the NAIITS-Providence partnership is Indigenous peoples of North America, although non-Indigenous peoples who are interested in a non-western approach to biblical, theological, missiological and community education are of course more than welcome to participate.
The goal is to be effectively engaged in the wider Christian community, in our own Indigenous communities and in the broader society, and to do so with greater levels of confidence that we have something to contribute not just to our own people, but also to the wider Canadian context.
Indigenous academic leaders have designed and tailored these courses for Indigenous people and those serving in Indigenous communities. More than 80% of instructors in the program are Indigenous North Americans with masters and doctoral degrees from a wide range of universities and seminaries. Student will learn from instructors who are engaged in their own Indigenous communities and are committed followers of Jesus. NAIITS faculty is passionate about providing these undergraduate courses for Indigenous individuals and communities.
Courses are available in a flexible, accessible format using Zoom videoconferencing technology so as to ensure maximum accessibility by students and faculty. This online-hybrid option allows students to live in their home community, thus allowing students to engage the courses in the program in such a way as to enhance his or her own learning.
Mutual Learning Community
Students will join with colleagues who are also living and/or working in Indigenous contexts. As a result, the student will grow in their leadership capacity as learning relationships are built. The program will also provide one-to-one experiences and mentorship as and where possible.

Introduction to Indigenous Studies
This is a survey course of First Nations peoples and issues from their origins in North America to the contemporary period. In general, this course seeks to emphasize the place (and indeed, centrality) of First Nations peoples and issues within historic and contemporary Canada.
Colonization & Decolonization
This course introduces and examines colonization and decolonization through Indigenous philosophy, experiences, and theories. The course will interrogate settler colonialism and the ways in which people participate in the process of settler colonialism knowingly and unknowingly. We will examine a range of issues resulting from settler colonization and the ways in which Indigenous people resist, self-determine, and revitalize an Indigenous worldview.
This course focuses on an asset-based approach to Ministry and Community engagement. The course will examine community demographics, economics and culture in stressed communities, particularly rural, and the implications for ministry. It will explore theological and theoretical models for ministry that work to build health and resilience in the surrounding community. The course will also engage students in a research project concerning their own ministry context to begin to assess the degree to which its demographic, social, economic and spiritual character comports with the model we are examining in class.
Contemporary Indigenous Studies
Using Indigenous and non-Indigenous literature and research this course explores the shifts in recent decades of Indigenous worldviews, knowledge systems, spiritual practices and beliefs, particularly through the lens of Indigenous youth and young adults.

While not guaranteed, NAIITS attempts to offer a tuition-directed scholarship for the MA program(s), which is made available through the generosity of faculty and friends. If you believe you might qualify for the scholarship, you are encouraged to apply according to the following guidelines.
$100 per credit hour taken per award period deemed eligible to a maximum lifetime
award of $5000.
Requirements for Consideration
1. Scholarship awards are directed primarily toward Native North American, then other Indigenous peoples – in that order. Non-Indigenous students may apply and be considered, but will not be guaranteed.
2. Scholarships will be awarded solely at the discretion of NAIITS faculty and/or administration, which may make other awards as deemed appropriate.
3. Students must be enrolled or accepted into one of the NAIITS degree programs.
4. Students must be enrolled full time in two consecutive semesters for the year in which the scholarship is being awarded. Full-time status for degree programs is considered reached at 6 hours per semester.
5. Students must reapply for scholarships each year. NOTE: Subsequent withdrawal from courses to below the above level, or failure to complete courses in the semester for which the award is given will disqualify the applicant from reapplying for one full year.
6. Applications must be received by March 1st to be considered for the April 30th awards and by July 1st to be considered for the August 30th awards respectively.
7. Students who are applying for other student aid in their country of residence must complete and file required documents personally – they will not be filed by NAIITS.
NOTE: Successful applicants are not prevented from applying for scholarships from other sources of funding.

NAIITS - An Indigenous Learning Community
NAIITS (formerly North American Institute for Indigenous Theological Studies) is one of two divisions of Indigenous Pathways, a non-sectarian organization dedicated to working together with the Indigenous community to develop and articulate Indigenous perspectives in theology and practice. We encourage Indigenous learning styles and world views in our instruction as we facilitate the development of a body of written work addressing biblical, theological, and ethical issues from within Native North American and other Indigenous perspectives. We do so in concert with partners of other ethnicities whom we have invited to speak into this context. NAIITS currently has five degree program partnerships offering undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs.
